Previous knowledge:
Previous lesson students learn that timber comes from trees and different trees are broken into two main groups’ hard wood and soft wood.

Objectives:

1.       To define the meaning of timber conversion and list the two main types of conversion with 90%      accuracy
       2.       State the advantages and disadvantages of each method of conversion.
       3.       Illustrate the two methods of conversion
       4.       Explain the process of making a wooden chair starting from a tree.  85% accuracy.

Analyzed Audience:

This lesson presentation is geared for the average learner in 2nd form, age range 12-14 years. There are no known learning disabilities of this group. Students are seated in a conventional class room setting.  Students come from rural parts of the island, and diverse home environments.
Students work well in groups and enjoy an interactive lesson plan.  It has been observed that the class appreciates notes presented in point format for orderly retention.  Class likes when hints are given for upcoming tests and love true and false formatted questions.
 Teaching Methods:
The lesson intends to meet the need of all three leaning styles and activities will be done independently.
Visual - would be presented with a large number of pictures of the content and real representation of actual lumber examples would be passed around the class.
Auditory - would be satisfied with the class discussion and the elaboration of the teacher’s notes.
Kinesthetic - learner would have the opportunity to touch the wood and illustrate images through the learning activities.
Media / Medium/ resources:   Laptop, projector, speakers, samples of various wood boards, Pencils, pencil crayons, markers, chalk.

Procedure / lesson development:

Introduction – students assist with projector equipment setup. (5 minutes)
Recapping on some important points of previous lesson, what is timber?, cross-section of a tree, type of trees? The teacher would state a view of the objectives and begin presentation.

Power Point (PP) presentation would be used throughout the entire lesson 9 slides (6 minutes each) Along with dictated notes and discussions on the topic. The learning activities/ assessment would be in aid of students’ final unit project piece.
The presentation of slide 4 and with the addition of the notes for each process will be used in the 2nd learning activity. The various jobs involving each stage would be highlighted.  Indication of possible countries in the region that would perform the conversion process would also be mentioned.
Slide 6-8 introduces the first learning activity. In their note books students will draw the two methods of conversion and show a drawing of the face grain and end grain of wood cut from each method.  Actual samples of boards would be present to give a more visual idea. Walk around the class to evaluate student’s work.
Summary slide 9 recaps the pp and introduces the second learning activity.
Assessment/ 2nd learning activity using information in their note book illustrate the different stages/process involving a tree till the end product of a wooden chair. Students may use markers, pencils, and images to complete piece. The end product would be completed for homework and form part of their final unit project.

Conclusion:
Recap the salient points of the lesson. Provide opportunity for students to ask any questions and concerns on the topic.

Reflection:
We got off to a late start as we realized the lighting on the designated wall was insufficient, after opening some windows due to the heat.  This resulted in shifting the direction of the classroom furniture. The PP presentation overall was a success as the students gave rave reviews, (“Teacher it sell off”).  The main points of the topic were highlighted and interactive discussion was held. However one of the two repeaters kept interjecting in a disturbing fashion which resulted in the teacher having to firmly reprimand him and assigning him the task of gathering the students email addresses in order to forward the presentation.

MY PORTFOLIO REFLECTION

Powerpoint presentation piece on the Topic Timber Conversion geared for my 2nd form Building Technology class, Give me the opportunity to see the advantages of using technology for instruction.

I approached this assignment with a somewhat negative attitude toward the use of animation in powerpoint, as I had never utilized it before. However, as I progressed,I bought into the different possibilities of using this technique to showcase the most salient points.  Also,I focused on my audience and was further encouraged and creative.  When presenting the presentation to my critics, experienced teachers, one of whom was apprehensive towards animation, gave a smile of approval when hearing the background sound of a saw used for emphases in the content. Another critic commented favorable for the use of 3D images of the timber. Everyone who viewed the assignment agreed that the presentation would be suitable for all ages.

On hindsight, I concluded that animation could been further utilized within the lesson. I could have developed the recap slide (slide2) using pictures and including additional information along with the hyperlink.

During the process of this exercise,I gained greater appreciation for the power point program as a learning tool and can see potential benefits of including it into my lessons. Realizing that the incorporation of technology could make instruction easy and exciting,I now look forward to using this concept in the classroom.

AWESOME JOB TVET TEACHER!
